Can you give CBD oil to dogs?
The short answer is: Of course you can. CBD or cannabidiol is an extract from industrial hemp, specially cultivated to contain very little (less than the legal limit of 0,3%) THC, the component that gets you or your dog high and a high concentration of CBD that is responsible for many health benefits in humans and all pets alike.
A decade or two ago, scientific research of cannabis revealed a system in our bodies that we were unaware of before. Not surprisingly it was named after cannabis that led to its discovery: the endocannabinoid system.
Dogs, pets and practically all animals have an endocannabinoid system just like humans. The endocannabinoid system is responsible in our dog’s body (and our body) for its health- and emotional balance, immune system regulation, and healing.
The compounds of your dogs’ endocannabinoid system are endocannabinoids (EC’s) that work on the neuroreceptors that in turn regulate the production of hormones, proteins, controlling the immune system, internal organs and thinking and feeling of your dog.
The natural equivalents of endocannabinoids found in cannabis/hemp are phytocannabinoids, which interact with your dogs’ endocannabinoid systems just the same. They just supplement them in case of shortage to balance them out.
Is pot bad for dogs?
As we already mentioned, CBD does not get your dog high, because it is harvested from industrial hemp in which the cannabis component THC, responsible for psychotropic effects, is reduced to a bare minimum (legal limit (0,3%). The cannabis plant, which differs in this way from industrial hemp, has a much higher concentration of THC and a much lower concentration of CBD.

Vet CBD dosing chart
Dosing is one of the most important things once you have decided to start giving your dog cannabidiol. Unfortunately, there is very little information on the web of how much CBD/cannabidiol you should give your dog.
Therefore we have put together a vet CBD dosing chart, for easy determination of the dosing amount for your pet. We have put together this chart based on the following criteria:
- Start with a low dosage and slowly increase up to the regular daily dosage
- Dosing needs to be based on the weight of your pet (0,05 mg CBD/kg dog’s weight)
- Three smaller doses per day instead of than 1 big dose
- Dogs up to 35 kg (~75 lbs) regular daily dosage of ~9 mg
- Dogs over 35 kg (~75 lbs) regular daily dosage of ~15 mg
- Maximum daily dosing for dogs is 1mg/kg/day – for a 35 kg dog, this is 35mg/day, etc.
- Treatment period is 90 days
How much CBD Oil should I give my dog?
CBD dosages can be handled boldly as there are virtually no side effects and overdose limit. So, there is no harm in starting with 15 or 20 mg per day. However, because of the many different dogs, this average amount might be too much or not enough.
Therefore we have divided the dogs into two weight groups, to give you a starting point for further fine-tuning. You can test what dosage works for your dog, by starting with the dosage according to the below dosage roadmap and monitor your dog’s health.
If you see no improvement after four or five days increase the dosage by 5 mg and continue monitoring its health. As soon as you notice the symptoms are gone, stay on that dosage for another two weeks to conclude the treatment.
CBD Dosage for Dogs
|mg / day||Dogs under 35 kg (75 lbs)||Dogs above 35 kg (75 lbs)|
|Day 1 to 4||10||15 or more|
|Day 5 to 9||Increase to 15 if necessary||Increase to 25 mg if necessary|
|Day 10 to 30||Increase to 20 if necessary||Increase to 35+ mg if necessary|

How to administer CBD to your dog
There are several ways of giving your dog the cannabidiol tincture.
- Sublingual – under your dog’s tongue
- Drop and mix it with the dog food
- Drop and mix it with its drinking water
- CBD pet treats
For sublingual administering, it is best to use a flavorless tincture like Triniti CBD has. Dropping the cannabidiol tincture under your dog’s tongue has the advantage that it is absorbed by its body faster because it doesn’t have to take the longer route through the digestive system.
For people, there are also other ways to take CBD.
